Untitled
Taewon Heo は都市のあらゆる場所でペイントのシミ（Painting）を発見し収集してきた。今回の作品は2005年から続けてきたPaintingシリーズの写真の中で、2012年のニューヨークで撮影した写真である。彼にとってPaintingとは「（アートとしての）絵画としてのPainting」、「塗装技術としてのpainting」、そして「描くという行為としてのpainting」という意味を含む。都市の中で発見されたこのPaintingのシリーズは、塗るという点でアーティストの絵画と本質的に性質を持つものであり、時にはセクミョン抽象やカラーフィールドペインティング、モノクローム絵画とも似たイメージを示す。
以前、作家は「a pair paintings（ペアの絵画）」という制作を行ったことがあるが、これは建物管理人が壁に塗った塗料の跡をキャンバス上に模写し、両方のイメージを並置させるものであった。アーティストによるペインティングと建物管理人によるものが全く同じイメージを持つ場合、両方のペインティングを、芸術と芸術ではないこととを、どのように区別するのだろうか？この写真の展示は、アーティストのpaintingを見せるためのスペースで、建物管理人によるpaintingを提示することによって、両方のpaintingのコンテキストを重ねることにその目的がある。塗る行為としてのpaintingと、絵画としてのpaintingをめぐる文脈が重なることで、この展示は鑑賞者に問いを投げかける空間となる。
この写真作品のタイトルを「Untitled」としたのは、写真の中の塗装（painting）がアーティストによるものなのか、他の誰かによるもの（found painting）なのかを不明瞭にし、これによる誤解もまた作品の一部と考えられるからである。
Untitled
I have been spotting and collecting painting images from various places since 2005 , and this is taken in New York in 2012 .
Painting for me includes “painting as an art form”, “painting techniques”, and “painting as an act of painting” . Painting images in this series have basically the same properties as artists’ painting in that they paint paint and sometimes show similar images to color field painting or monochrome painting .
Previously, I made a work called ‘a pair paintings’, which was mimicking the paint mark of janitor on the canvas and juxtaposed with the paint mark photo . If artists’ paintings and paintings of janitors have the same image, how do you distinguish between the two paintings, art and non – art? The purpose of this exhibition is to overlap the context of the two paintings by showing janitor’s painting in a space that shows the artist’s painting . As the context surrounding “painting as an act of painting” and “painting as an art form” overlaps, the exhibition space becomes a space for questions .
The title of this picture is called “Untitled” because it makes it unclear whether the painting in the picture is by the artist or by someone else and that this misunderstanding is part of the work .
